WEST FARGO — The West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs are on top of the Class A baseball world in North Dakota once again as they won their fourth state championship in five seasons.
However, in early May, the Mustangs' season was on the brink. After a 5-0 start, the team lost nine of its next 13 games, and it looked like they may not even qualify for the East Region tournament.
Following the team's doubleheader defeat at the hands of Fargo North, the Mustangs sat at 10-9 and were heading into a two-game home series against the defending state champion Shanley Deacons.
Sheyenne needed a spark, so they looked to a former University of North Dakota tight end whose story has become one of inspiration and heart, Hunter Pinke.
