When Thunderbird Restaurant at McPhillips and Jefferson opened in 1961, there were farmers’ fields all around it. The Maples simply didn’t exist yet. But T-Bird’s long run came to an end a week ago when the door was locked and a note went up on the glass thanking customers for all their support. The latest owner of the business has been at it for over a decade but was ready to retire and couldn’t find a buyer. The building’s owner hopes to find a new tenant, so Thunderbird may live on, but parking continues to be an issue as the city says an easement agreement with the nearby grocery store doesn’t exist.
