According to the New York Post , Atlantic Starr formed in 1976 in White Plains, New York, founded by the Lewis brothers, drummer Porter Carroll Jr., bassist Clifford Archer, and flutist Joseph Phillip.

Early members also included singer Sharon Bryant and horn players William Sudderth III and Damon Rentie, later replaced by Barbara Weathers and Koran Daniels.
