MEMPHIS, Tenn.- As the Memphis City Council works to finalize its budget, some are proposing steep cuts to the Memphis Area Transit Authority. "It's vital to so many in our community," said Memphis City Councilwoman Jerri Green on Thursday. "But at the same time, we can't keep releasing blank checks without understanding where it's being spent." Instead of giving $30 million to MATA, she proposes giving $15 million initially. The other $15 million would be placed in a fund reserved for public transportation. "We believe in strong public transportation for our city," she said.
