Donald Trump is using a heavy hand in California to suppress protests against his immigration policies, and it is bound to backfire, according to a political strategist.

Shaniqua McClendon, vice president of politics for Crooked Media, appeared on MSNBC on Sunday to discuss the protests, and Trump's response.

McClendon initially says Trump's administration is making things "really tense" and that "they want the protesters to react in ways that "justify" responses that are "over the top."

She compared the situation to the George Floyd protests in 2020, and then said Trump is "trying to get a reaction out of them."

"But I think the thing that may backfire him is that he's bringing more attention. More people are probably tuning into the news right now, and they're going to start to wonder what is going on," she said. "They're going to start to hear more that there are people who are being arrested, people who are being deported without any due process, and start to pay attention to what he's doing."

She then added, "And this is going to backfire on him. But I just hope it's not enough time that, you know, he can be stopped."
