Two swimmers are in critical condition after being rescued from the Merrimack River Sunday evening.
Newburyport police and firefighters responded to a report of a swimmer in distress near Plum Island Point around 7 p.m., Newburyport police said in a press release . At the scene, they found two swimmers in distress.
A nearby fisherman was able to bring one of the swimmers to shore, police said. The unresponsive swimmer was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Another nearby fisherman was able to pull the other swimmer into their boat, police said. The U.S. Coast Guard came onto the boat and medically aided the swimmer before bringing them to shore.
Both swimmers were taken to nearby hospitals in critical condition, police said. The Newburyport Police Department is still investigating t
