Council to review local option sales tax increase

The Knoxville City Council will consider Mayor Indya Kincannon’s one-half of one percent sales tax when it meets Tuesday evening. Exempted from the tax, in a separate motion, is the retail sale of food and food ingredients. If a second reading passes council this month, the local option sales tax referendum will appear on the November ballot for city voters to decide.

Knox County has an option of also placing the proposed increase on the November ballot and, if so, a “No” vote by county residents would kill the city’s increase.
