MEMPHIS, Tenn. - As ozone levels lower in cities across the country, they are increasing in the Mid-South.
Ozone is better described as smog. It gets into our air through emissions from factories, plants, and our cars.
Ozone also makes it more difficult to breathe. Asthma rates are also increasing in the Mid-South. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recently designated Memphis an ‘Asthma Capitol,’ naming it the 15th most challenging place to live in the country for people with the condition.
Now, environmentalists are stepping in. The Southern Environmental Law Center filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency asking it to re-designate the Memphis area as in nonattainment of national standards for ozone.
