OLYMPIA – Washington State is gearing up for a potentially long and smoky summer as Smoke Ready Week kicks off Monday, June 9.

The Washington State Department of Health, National Weather Service, and regional agencies are leading the campaign to prepare residents for wildfire season, the Department of Health said in a release .

The annual initiative aims to raise awareness and provide resources to protect health from wildfire smoke, which poses significant risks, especially to older adults, children, and those with chronic conditions.

Forecasts suggest a higher-than-normal wildfire risk across the state, with parts already under drought conditions. The risk is expected to persist through September.
