State pensioners who have £10,000 income may be unable to receive the £300 Winter Fuel Allowance. Under Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) rules, if you have £10,000 or less in savings and investments this will not affect your Pension Credit.

But, if you have more than £10,000, every £500 over £10,000 counts as £1 income a week - with state pensioners at risk. For example, if you have £11,000 in savings, this counts as £2 income a week.

Capital means any amount of cash you have to your name including savings in any bank or building society account, as well as premium bonds, stocks, shares and the value of any property that isn't being used as your main home.
