The Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre is pleased to welcome back filmmaker David Bouthillier as its second guest speaker in its 2025 Speaker Series.

On Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. the Heritage Centre presents a special screening of Bouthillier’s latest short film, Balaclava: The Last Water Powered Sawmill.

This documentary tells the story of Canada’s last commercially operating water-powered sawmill in Balaclava, Ontario. Built in 1855 and powered by Constant Creek until its closure in 1967, the now-crumbling structure raises an important question: why wasn’t it saved?

Through historical exploration, interviews, and a search for remaining machinery, Bouthillier invites viewers to reflect on the importance — and fragility — of our built heritage.
