Mercline Augustin said her uncle is a professor at the State University of Haiti. He used to travel back and forth from Haiti to the U.S., but under the new ban that takes effect today, he will not be able to travel freely, she said.
“This is inhumane,” said Augustin, 40, a Haitian American who lives in New Jersey. “To just put a stop to the privilege of being able to see family members.”

Augustin and her family are among thousands affected by President Donald Trump’s travel ban, which bars nationals from Haiti and 11 other countries from visiting the United States and restricts travel for others in countries like Cuba — a move that has brought a mixed reaction from leaders and advocates for the impacted communities.
“This newest rendition of the Trump
