AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine secretary of state's office is warning about a widespread scam text.
The scam text warns of unpaid fines due to traffic violations.
"Don't fall for the scammers' criminal tricks," the department wrote in a social media post. "Report the text as junk, and whatever you do, don't click on the link."
The department added it would never notify residents of a license suspension via text. The text also references the "Maine Department of Motor Vehicles," which is another sign the text is a scam. In Maine it's called the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
