Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Black people nationwide.
Juneteenth celebrates the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Galveston is widely considered the last area to have received the news of freedom.
While officially observed on June 19, festivities honoring the holiday happen throughout the month. As June approaches, check out ways to celebrate across the Queen City. Festivities include history tours, day parties, cinema series and more.
