Four suspects from DC were arrested after breaking into a store and leading police on a multi-vehicle pursuit and foot chase across Maryland, the sheriff’s office said.
The chaos began around 4:20 a.m. Sunday, June 8, when deputies responded to a retail burglary alarm in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance video showed a Honda fleeing the scene, before deputies spotted the car in Mechanicsville and tried to stop it near the 26000 block of Three Notch Road — but the driver took off.
Deputies deployed stop sticks, bringing the car to a stop, at which point, several people jumped out and ran.
Aerial and ground searches were launched with help from Trooper 7, a K-9 unit from Charles County, MSP troopers, and drone teams, the sheriff’s office said.
One suspect was picked up after being seen speeding in a silver BMW in the Queen Tree Road area. Three others were caught after a tip from a community member who spotted a silver Nissan Altima on Delabrooke Road, heading toward New Market Turner Road.
The Honda was later confirmed stolen.
The four arrested suspects — David Burch, 29; Darryl Harrison, 22; Ejion Thorton, 19; and Javeion White, 19, all of Washington DC — were charged with:
- Second-degree burglary;
- Third-degree burglary;
- Theft of up to $1,500 but less than $25,000;
- Destruction of property.
They were taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown pending bond hearings.
“This investigation is far from over,” said Sheriff Steve Hall. “The work will continue for weeks, because, as is often the case, the real challenge begins after the arrest is made.”
“These were not random acts,” he added. “These are individuals with no regard for others—speeding through our streets in stolen cars, breaking into businesses, and leaving a trail of damage behind. In St. Mary’s County.
"We will not allow criminals to come into our community and act without consequence.”
The sheriff’s office thanked Maryland State Police, Charles County Sheriff’s Office, and local residents who provided crucial tips.
