MERIDEN, Conn — Meriden officials said in a statement Monday that "our community is outraged" after a Maloney High School senior was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
In a letter on June 6, Mark Benigni, superintendent of Meriden Public Schools, said that the student was detained at an immigration hearing in Hartford. He noted that ICE did not contact the district or any Meriden public school.
Monday's statement from Mayor Kevin Scarpati and City Council Majority Leader Sonya Jelks, on behalf of the detained student's family, said that the community is "working hard to get our Maloney student back to Connecticut."
