A mass shooting in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood early Sunday left one woman dead and five others injured. The incident occurred just before 2:48 a.m. on North La Cross Avenue during a large outdoor gathering, according to police reports.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found six individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. A 22-year-old woman was critically injured and later pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Her identity has not been released.
Among the injured, three victims are in critical condition. An 18-year-old man was shot in the chest and left arm, while a 17-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. Both are receiving treatment at Stroger Hospital. Another 18-year-old was treated at the scene for a graze wound to his left hand. A 29-year-old man, who was shot in the right leg, is also in critical condition at Loretto Hospital. A 29-year-old woman was shot in the right elbow and is in good condition at Rush Hospital.
As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. This incident is part of a troubling pattern, as police reported two additional shootings in the same neighborhood within hours of the mass shooting.
Around 4:37 a.m., an 18-year-old boy was shot in the back on West Maypole Avenue and later died at Stroger Hospital. Another 18-year-old was also injured in that incident, which stemmed from an argument with a gunman in a vehicle.
Earlier that morning, police found a 20-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds to her arm on North Lamon Avenue. She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and is in good condition.
These shootings occurred less than a day after a separate mass shooting in Baltimore, Maryland, which resulted in one death and five injuries, including a 5-year-old girl. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
