The mockery about “chart crimes” — big boo-boos with data graphics — nearly overshadowed the technology upgrades announced by two artificial intelligence start-ups.

During a demonstration Thursday of ChatGPT’s newest version, GPT-5, the company showed a visual in which it appeared 52.8 percent was a larger number than 69.1 percent, which also was somehow equal to 30.8 percent.
