Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM-01) warned during a visit to Roswell next week that the 2026 midterm elections will be “the most important election in modern history” and that the balance of power in Congress could hinge on whether one of her colleagues in New Mexico is reelected.

Speaking to an audience at Stellar Coffee Co. in Roswell during an Aug. 13 town hall, Stansbury stressed that Democrats' hopes for retaking the House and conducting oversight of the Trump administration will require the party to defeat Republicans in several competitive districts, as well as retain seats held by vulnerable Democrats, such as Rep. Gabe Vasquez (D-NM-02).
