CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Back-to-school season is here, and so is the unpredictable weather in the Carolinas. From ice and snow to high winds and severe weather, these conditions can throw a wrench into your morning routine and sometimes even cancel class altogether.

Even just a dusting of snow or a thin sheet of black ice can be enough to delay or cancel school. Why? It's because school buses cover hundreds of miles each morning and even one slick road can be dangerous.

If gusts are pushing 30–50 mph, it can actually be too windy for buses to safely operate. Heavy rain that leads to flooded roads or tornado watches can force schools to dismiss early or switch to remote learning. And if storms knock out power or damage school buildings, classes may be canceled even if it’s sunny the next day.
