A good way into its hour-and-45-minute performance Tuesday night, Aug. 20, at the Pine Knob Music Theatre, Volbeat posited a musical theory that it’s best to “Better Be Fueled Than Tamed.”

Rest assured it was a night that supported that idea.

Under drizzle and dank skies, Tuesday’s triple bill of the Danish quartet and support acts Halestorm and The Ghost Inside had their tanks full and offered heaping does of heavy rock fire from the stage.

Moreover, the three proved to the crowd of about 9,000 that the music itself could deliver the goods; Volbeat and Halestorm certainly had solid light shows (The Ghost Inside played in overcast daylight), but beyond the former’s frequent explosions of smoke behind the band there were none of the pyrotechnic special effects so common at any amphitheat
