AVERY COUNTY, N.C. — As Avery County students head back to the classroom, meteorologists are also heading into the historically busiest two months of hurricane season.
Approximately two-thirds of storms occur in the seven weeks between August 20 and October 10, with the historic peak of hurricane season statistically on September 10.
Last year, Hurricane Helene knocked Avery County Schools out for six weeks. But, even after students returned, impacts from the storm were still around.
District Transportation Director Brian King said the biggest impact on the transportation side was navigating around all the damage, downed trees, and roads that were closed or washed away. King explained that many parents were bringing students out as far as they could, even if that meant running them down
