Secretary credits President Trump with the idea, citing black paint’s ability to make the metal hotter in the sun.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Tuesday that the entire border wall along the U.S.-Mexico southern border will be painted black.

Speaking from a section of the wall in New Mexico, Noem stated the decision was made at the request of President Trump, who believes the darker color will make the metal hotter and more difficult for people to climb, thereby deterring illegal immigration. Noem even picked up a roller brush to help with the painting during her visit.

While U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks added that the paint would also help prevent rust, Noem emphasized that the primary purpose is to make the wall an even greater deterrent.
