LOS ANGELES – A 61-year-old man who was struck and killed by a vehicle and whose driver fled was identified by county authorities on Thursday.

What police described as “a possible silver (Chevrolet) Tahoe” SUV traveling southbound on San Pedro Street at a high rate of speed hit a pedestrian, identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Celestino Mateo, who was crossing eastbound on 95th Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The driver continued southbound on San Pedro Street following the collision without stopping to render aid to Mateo, police said.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived at the location a short time later, where they pronounced Mateo dead at the scene, police said.
