Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that will see voters decide on whether to redraw congressional districts ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

Vowing that a special election is critical to preserving democracy, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation August 21 that will give voters a chance to decide on new congressional maps designed to increase the state’s number of Democratic House members. The Democratic-controlled Legislature earlier in the day passed the bills in response to similar action in Texas that could give its congressional delegation five more Republican seats.   Dubbed the “Election Rigging Response Act,” Golden State voters will weigh in on Proposition 50 come November 4.
