The FBI is conducting a search of John Bolton's home in Maryland as part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents. Bolton served as national security adviser during Donald Trump's first term but later became a vocal critic of the former president.

A source familiar with the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the search. The source was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Bolton has not been detained or charged with any crimes, according to the source.

Messages left for Bolton's spokesperson and the White House were not returned on Friday. A lawyer who has represented Bolton also did not provide immediate comments regarding the search.

Bolton was Trump's third national security adviser, serving for 17 months. His tenure was marked by disagreements with Trump on key issues, including Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea. He faced scrutiny during his time in office over a book he published that officials claimed revealed classified information. However, the Justice Department dropped its lawsuit and a separate grand jury investigation into the matter in 2021.

In January, on his first day back in office, Trump revoked the security clearances of over four dozen former intelligence officials, including Bolton. Earlier in 2025, Bolton was also among several former Trump officials whose security details were canceled by Trump.
