Five people were killed and dozens more injured when a tour bus overturned on the Thruway in western New York.
The Genesee County crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-90 in the town of Pembroke, between exits 48A and 49, at around 12:20 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, according to New York State Police.
A preliminary investigation found that the bus, owned by M&Y Tour Inc., was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls when it lost control, crossed the median, then overturned on the southern shoulder, police said. The bus came to rest on its right side.
Five people died in the wreck, Trooper James O'Callaghan told reporters. Police initially believed a child died in the wreck, but the agency later clarified that no children were killed.
Several victims were either ejected from the bus or entrapped when the vehicle rolled. In all, 49 passengers were taken to the hospital.
“Almost every person in this collision has some sort of cut, bruise, or abrasion as an injury," O'Callaghan said.
Surviving victims were being taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. The extent of their injuries and conditions were not immediately clear.
Most of those on board were Chinese, Indian, or Filipino nationals, according to investigators.
"The driver is alive and well," O'Callaghan said. "We're working with him. We believe we have a good idea of what happened, why the bus lost control."
Police and fire agencies from throughout the region responded to the crash site, and several medical helicopters were on scene.
A Family Assistance Center for the victims and their families was established at the Amherst Senior Center, located at 370 John James Audubon Parkway in Buffalo.
Following the collision, Buffalo-based ConnectLife, a blood and organ donor network, put out an emergency call for blood donors.
"Blood is urgently needed to save lives," the organization posted on Facebook. Those interested in donating are asked to call 716-529-4270 or visit the ConnectLife website.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage is asked to contact State Police at 716-289-4279.
