It's a two-way tie for the Tour Championship lead after 54 holes
Tommy Fleetwood closed birdie-birdie-par to shoot a 3-under 67 and tie Patrick Cantlay atop the East Lake Golf Club leaderboard in the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale.
After double bogey, Tommy Fleetwood makes consecutive birdies
Fleetwood's double bogey on 15 coupled with a Patrick Cantlay birdie flipped the script and put Cantlay in the lead. But Fleetwood is a fighter and he rallied back for two straight birdies. One came before and the other came after Cantlay birdied the 18th hole. Cantlay's 64 gave him the clubhouse lead at 16 under but Fleetwood is once again tied for the lead.
Tommy Fleetwood gives up lead after double bogey
Up three shots on two different occasions Saturday, Fleetwood found water on the 15th hole and after his third from the drop area, he needed two putts to find the cup. A double-bogey 5 dropped him back to 14 under.
Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay birdied the 17th to get to 15 under and take the solo lead. Cantlay is 5 under with one to go. He's posted scores of 64-66 so far this week.
Tommy Fleetwood takes his second three-shot lead of the day
Fleetwood made a birdie on the 13th to get to 16 under and take his second-three lead of the third round.
Scottie Scheffler inching his way up Tour Championship leaderboard
World No. 1 Scheffler is 3 under through 13 and has it to 11 under, four shots off the lead of Tommy Fleetwood. He started the day bogey-bogey but has made five birdies over the 11 holes since.
Tommy Fleetwood makes another long birdie putt
On the seventh hole, he made the first birdie of the day (and it'll be the only birdie as he's in the final group) in Saturday's third round. Even bigger, it took him to 15 under and gave him a two-shot lead over Russell Henley, his playing partner.
Fleetwood's 44-footer drew a huge road from the crowd, finally enjoying some better weather as the rain has let up. Earlier in the week Fleetwood joked that it would be 'funny' if he won this week.
He would make another birdie on No. 8 for a fourth straight birdie to get to 16 under.
Tommy Fleetwood makes long birdie putt
The sentimental favorite by many fans, Fleetwood drained a 14-footer for birdie on the fifth hole. Playing partner Russell Henley also made birdie on the same hole so the duo pull ahead at 13 under.
Patrick Cantlay joins the fun atop the leaderboard
Cantlay is 2 under through six holes and he's got it to 12 under to forge a three-way tie with Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley at the Tour Championship. Cantlay was the 2021 FedEx Cup champion. His last win was the 2022 BMW Championship.
Keegan Bradley holes out for eagle at East Lake
After birdies on the second and third holes, Bradley holed out for eagle on the sixth on Saturday. From 58 yards away, Bradley's ball chased towards the hole and then wrapped around the left side of the cup before dropping down. The U.S. Ryder Cup captain keeps taking questions about picking himself for Bethpage and he's now 10 under and tied for fourth, so the questions will persist.
Leaders are on the course at East Lake
The final pairing of Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley, each tied at 13 under, have teed off for their third rounds, the last group to start. Golf stats guru Justin Ray has some interesting tidbits about Henley:
Ryder Cup watch: Keegan Bradley playing with Justin Thomas
Thomas just missed out on an automatic qualifying spot for the U.S. team for the 2025 Ryder Cup, finishing seventh in the U.S. team rankings. Bradley will announce his captain's picks, the last six for the 12-man squad, on Wednesday, and while nothing is ever guaranteed, Thomas would be an easy pick for Bradley. Those two are playing together starting at 1:49 p.m. ET on Saturday for the third round.
First groups are off as rain is falling at East Lake
J.J. Spaun and 2023 FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland were the first duo to hit the course and they did so under low hanging clouds in the sky. Rain is falling at East Lake Golf Club, as droplets can be seen on TV hitting the lake near the 18th green.
Tour Championship weather forecast for Saturday
About 90 minutes before the first group of Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley were set to tee off, the PGA Tour announced preferred lies would be in effect for the third round. The weather forecast, according to Accuweather:
Mostly cloudy and humid with a couple of showers and a heavy thunderstorm, especially late in the day; there can be ponding on roadways Hi: 78°. Tonight: A thunderstorm in spots this evening; otherwise, rather cloudy and humid Lo: 69°
Busy week in golf includes new CEO's first Tour Championship
Brian Rolapp, on the job as PGA Tour CEO for less than three weeks, answered a variety of questions on Wednesday ahead of the 2025 Tour Championship, including some regarding LIV Golf. This line of questioning in particular made for an interesting back-and-forth about bringing the best golfers in the world together more often. Rolapp then said:
“Look, I think I'm going to focus on what I can control. I would offer to you that the best collection of golfers in the world are on the PGA Tour. I think there's a bunch of metrics that demonstrate that, from rankings to viewership to whatever you want to pick. I'm going to lean into that and strengthen that,” Rolapp said. “I will also say that to the extent we can do anything that's going to further strengthen the PGA Tour, we'll do that, and I'm interested in exploring whatever strengthens the PGA Tour.”
Where's Scottie Scheffler on the third-round leaderboard?
World No. 1 Scheffler shot a 1-under 69 and is in solo sixth after 36 holes. Afterwards, he was asked about the weather, in light of Friday's tee times moving up three hours and what might be in store for the weekend.
"I think this golf course definitely plays a bit different when it's firm. Would I hope the rain stays away? Yes. Also, so we don't get extremely delayed over the weekend. But we'll see what happens. I can't control the weather," he said. "Today the weather forecast looked pretty bad as we were and we were able to get 18 holes in, so we'll see what happens over the next couple days."
