HOUSTON (CW39) – Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare announced charges against former MD Anderson Cancer Center researcher Yunhai Li, 35, for allegedly attempting to steal proprietary cancer-related research and take it to China.

Li, a Chinese national employed at MD Anderson since 2022 on a U.S. research scholar visa, worked on projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. On July 9, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations found sensitive medical data in his belongings as he tried to leave for China.

Li is charged with Theft of Trade Secrets, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 in fines, and Tampering with a Government Record, a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail an
