INDIAN TRAIL — Carson senior Eric Gillis opened his cross country season with a school and county record clocking of 15:14.5 in the Carolinas Kickoff hosted by Metrolina Christian.

Gillis won by 29 seconds over a strong field that included some of the state’s top runners in the preseason rankings.

Carson coach Zach Marchinko broke records with a 15:22 time for the Cougars in 2016.

As a junior, Gillis placed fifth in the 3200 in the 3A Track and Field Championships and was fourth in the 3A Cross County Championships. He ran a PR of 15:48 in that meet, but shattered their mark on Saturday.
