EL CENTRO — A severe storm swept through the Imperial Valley today, leaving a trail of widespread power outages and prompting a coordinated response from local agencies to assist affected residents.

The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) confirmed that the storm caused significant damage to power poles and lines across its service area. IID crews have been deployed and are working diligently and safely to restore power to residents left in the dark.

In response to the outages, a shelter has been opened by the Red Cross at Wilson Jr. High School Gym, located at 600 S Wilson St. in El Centro. The shelter will remain open until further notice to provide a safe place for those affected by the power and water outages.
