Two candidates are competing in an Aug. 26 special election in Woodbury County to fill a vacancy in Iowa Senate District 1, which is open following the death of Republican Sen. Rocky De Witt.

Democrat Catelin Drey and Republican Christopher Prosch are on the ballot in the western Iowa district.

National Democratic groups are mobilizing to support Drey, with the DNC organizing phone and texting banks. Republicans have invested more than $160,000 into advertising for Prosch.

Western Iowa voters are heading to the polls in a race that has the potential to cement or break Republicans' supermajority in the Iowa Senate.
