WASHINGTON — Back-to-school season is in full swing in the DMV which means school bus safety is at the forefront of people's minds. Maryland, D.C. and Virginia each have their own laws to ensure the safety of students getting to school. Here's a reminder of what drivers need to know as we share the road once again.

Maryland

When approaching a school bus in a car, be prepared to stop and to remain stopped until the flashing red lights are turned off or the bus begins to move.

If a driver does not stop:

Buses are equipped cameras which means camera citations can be issued. Camera citation fines are $250 and a police issue citation is $570 with three points on driver's license.

In two lane or multi-lane roadways

Drivers traveling in both directions must stop until the flashing redlights
