The last U.S. military plane, a C-17, departed Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan on Monday night, August 30, 2021, officially ending the longest war in U.S. history while Taliban fighters celebrated driving out the world’s most powerful military from one of the world’s poorest countries.

It is estimated that the U.S. had spent more than $2 trillion during the course of the war in Afghanistan and approximately 800,000 U.S. service men and women served. More than 124,000 Afghan and other civilians were successfully airlifted during the withdrawal in what would become the largest air evacuation in U.S. history.
