As Memorial Park leaders embark on a project to honor its World War I roots, an explosive discovery was made this week.

Part of an artillery shell was found Monday by a lawn-clearing crew in a wooded area of the popular park, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD), which deployed its bomb squad and ultimately detonated the device – causing a loud boom that park visitors might have heard.

The discovery was made during site preparations for Memorial Groves, a $42 million revitalization project that will pay homage to the park's origins as Camp Logan. The site served as a U.S. Army training facility between 1917-19, when more than 70,000 soldiers trained there.
