City Council members accepted an ordinance designating the Dr. Charles W. and Vivian L. Williams House in Hyde Park a historic landmark.
Why it matters: The house is known for its association with Dr. Charles Warren Williams, a surgeon who integrated the North Carolina Medical Society and Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
Williams and his wife, Vivian, an educator in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, were key participants in the design and development of Hyde Park Estates, a neighborhood for Black professionals on the Beatties Ford Corridor.
According to the historic landmark commission, historic landmark designation comes with special recognition and protections, like: • Safeguarding the landmark from certain local zoning laws and development measures • Helping avoid the loss or demolition
