NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - After recovering 39 animals from the Northeastern NC SPCA in Elizabeth City, Norfolk SPCA reported that two of the kittens tested positive for Calici virus.

The Calici virus is treatable and cats infected can recover, but it takes "intensive treatment, cleaning protocols, and protective gear to prevent further spread," according to Norfolk SPCA.

The virus tends to cause cold-like symptoms in felines and is easily spread "in shelter environments where cats are stressed and immune systems are weak."

The SPCA in Elizabeth City was fined nearly $15,000 and was forced to cease operations in August due to “severe, repeated and willful violations of the North Carolina Animal Welfare Act.”
