The Aug. 23 front-page article “Abrego freed, but ICE seeks to deport him to Uganda” reported that the federal government did the opposite of what it had testified it would do.

In July, the government presented a witness who testified that he couldn’t tell a U.S. district judge in Maryland what was planned for Kilmar Abrego García because no plans would be made until he had been taken into custody. The witness, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, testified that the decision about where to send Abrego would be made only after he was in ICE custody and only by the agent in charge. The judge was skeptical. The witness was adamant. The judge had ordered the government to provide a witness who knew about the Abrego case; instead, the government provided a witness with no firsthand
