ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland students are starting to get back to pre-pandemic levels.

The state Department of Education released results from the 2024-25 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP), showing continued but modest progress in reversing learning loss linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statewide, 50.8% of students demonstrated proficiency in English language arts (ELA), up from 48.4% in 2023-24. Math proficiency rose to 26.5%, compared to 24.1% the previous year. This marks the fourth full year of ELA and math assessments since the COVID-19 pandemic led to a shortened test in 2020-21.
