CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - An icon and trailblazer in the world of racing was laid to rest on Tuesday. Family and friends gathered at St. Gabriel Catholic Church to celebrate the life of H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler , the longtime president of the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

At 86-years-old, Wheeler lived a full life. He was described as a loving husband and father, a man of God, and a mentor in the world of racing.

Many said the larger-than-life personality will be dearly missed at the track and beyond.

In a simple pine coffin family, friends and racing dignitaries said their goodbyes to the man who helped grow the sport of NASCAR.
