HARLINGEN — Nearly four years after taking office, City Manager Gabriel Gonzalez is signing a new three-year contract, staying on as the city’s top administrator through what Mayor Norma Sepulveda described as Harlingen’s “transformative” years.

Gonzalez’s new contract, paying a $250,000 salary, comes after about two weeks of discussion within the commission and about five months after commissioners launched his annual evaluation process.

During a meeting, commissioners said they would “look at” giving him a pay increase, Gonzalez said, adding their last pay increase came two-and-a-half years ago.

The new contract would keep Gonzalez in office into 2029, making him Harlingen’s longest serving city manager in recent history.
