Five Missouri counties are suing the State Tax Commission over property assessment hikes.

The lawsuit, filed in Polk County, comes from Audrain, DeKalb, Pike, Polk, and Reynolds counties. It challenges the Commission’s push to raise property valuations, which local officials say is unfair and exceeds the Commission’s authority.

The Commission recently ordered counties to bring property values in line with market rates — between 90 and 110 percent — but some assessors argue the increases don’t reflect local conditions and could lead to steep tax hikes.

The counties are asking the court to block the Commission from enforcing the changes and from withholding state funds as a penalty for noncompliance.
