The arch that went up over Route 66 in Galena, Kansas, this week is just the latest in a number of local efforts to prepare for the famous highway's centennial and the hoped-for flood of tourists expected next year.

The official birthday of the Mother Road is Nov. 11, 1926, the day it was commissioned and road signs marking it started to go up from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. ×
