The Harlingen WaterWorks System is landing a $41.6 million grant and low-interest loan package to help fund a $258 million overhaul of the city’s sewer system.

Earlier this year, WaterWorks interim General Manager Roy Rodriguez applied to the Texas Water Development Board for the grant and loan aimed at funding the master plan’s two pivotal projects, including installation of a main pipeline known as the Little Creek Interceptor.

“That’s the foundation of all of the projects that are coming,” he said Tuesday in an interview. “Without these two projects, you can’t do the rest.”

Meanwhile, officials are holding off on increasing water rates based on Rodriguez’s review of the master plan surrounding the biggest project in the city’s history.
