Last Thursday, on August 18, Mexican officials informed a few US airlines that the slots at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) that were previously withdrawn would be returned. United Airlines confirmed the update in a filing to the US Department Of Transportation (DOT) on August 21.

The decision will effectively reverse restrictions imposed by Mexico that limited US carriers ’ access to the airport for the past two years. Neither the airport nor the Mexican Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) has officially confirmed the move, and specific details about the number of slots and their timeline for reinstatement have not yet been disclosed.
