CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Heavy rain and flooding impacted parts of the Lowcountry over the weekend, but despite the inclement weather, our area beaches fared well, officials said.
Overall, Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms saw minor erosion despite the significant amount of rainfall. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Charleston District told News 2, beach erosion is typical but can change quickly during major weather events.
"Erosion and accretion are really a natural part of life on South Carolina islands. So, really the smaller summer waves accrete and push the sand up. High energy winter waves suck the sand away. Sometimes major hurricanes can disrupt that cycle," Wes Wilson, project manager for USACE Charleston District, said.
