FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The World Animal Foundation says, following declining rates, in 2024, an estimated 607,000 animals were euthanized.
The organization released new statistics regarding pets and animal shelters gathered from organizations like the Shelter Animals Count.
According to the World Animal Foundation, almost 334,000 dogs and 273,00 cats were euthanized in shelters in 2024.
The organization says around 5.8 million animals entered shelters in 2024 and around 4.1 million found adoptive homes.
There are now 4,110 animal shelters and 6,417 rescues in the United States. 52% or 2,133 of the shelters are no-kill shelters. In 2016, 24% of shelters had a no-kill status.
In 2024, more than 4 million cats and dogs were adopted, with 2 million cats and 2 million dogs findin
