How do you feel about the future? When I ask people this question, I get a consistent mix of responses: apprehension, dread, worry, resignation and perhaps some curiosity. These sentiments are widely shared: in a global survey of 10,000 young people aged 16-25, conducted in 2021, 75% said that the future is frightening , while 56% said they think humanity is doomed.

Dystopian futures are compelling. Just like negative news headlines, they are more likely to be clicked on. And we’re not short of them.

When we hear stories about the future, they tend to focus on technological change and political decisions. They are usually sold to us pre-packaged, often by tech companies and billionaires , and are designed to meet their needs. They are presented as inevitable.
