Both the NAACP McDowell County branch and the McDowell County Democratic Party will host a special community gathering on Monday, Sept. 22, “for an inspiring evening of conversation, reflection and moral vision for our times.”

“We are honored to welcome Pastor Joel Simpson of First United Methodist Church in Taylorsville, N.C.,” reads a news release from the local NAACP and the Democratic Party.

Simpson is an active leader in the Poor People’s Campaign and earlier this year joined the Rev. Dr. William Barber in peaceful prayer and protest at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, an act of civil disobedience that drew national attention, according to the news release.
