U.S. stocks closed higher Aug. 27 as investors await earnings from tech heavyweight Nvidia after the market closes.

The S&P 500 added 15.44 points, or 0.2%, to close at 6,481.38, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 147.04 points or 0.3% to 45,565.11. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was up 45.87 points, 0.2%, to 21,590.14.

The chipmaker's earnings and sales are expected to jump from year-ago levels, but investors will scrutinize the company's outlook to see how tariffs, China sales and artificial intelligence spending are shaping up. Nvidia has topped estimates with quarterly results in 11 of the last 12 reports.

Economic news

Treasury yields inched higher as investors awaited a resolution to the White House's attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. The 10-year yield fell 2 basis points to 4.238%.

The White House's 50% tariffs on Indian products took effect Aug. 27, a consequence of India's purchases of Russian oil.

Corporate news

  • Abercrombie & Fitch posted quarterly results that beat Wall Street forecasts and upped its full-year outlook. The stock slid 9% after the opening bell but then recovered to close little changed.
  • Kohl's shares jumped nearly 24% after the retailer beat analyst expectations for the quarter and guided to a narrower-than-expected loss for the full year.
  • Okta stock rose after the cybersecurity firm reported earnings and revenue that topped Wall Street estimates and guidance came in higher than expected. Shares closed 1.6% higher.
  • Cracker Barrel's stock closed 8% higher after the company announced it would restore its old logo.
